Update: Major Storm Brings Snow, Wind, Rain and Floods

Sponsored by:

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for the western slope of the northern Sierra Nevada and Yosemite National Park above 5,000 feet, until 4 AM Tuesday.

Heavy snow is expected to continue above 5,000 feet. Heavier snow bands may be accompanied by snowfall rates of up to 3 inches per hour.

The snow levels will remain between 5,000 to 6,000 feet.

Additional snow accumulations above the 5,000 foot elevation, will range from half-a-foot to as much as seven feet. The higher you go, the more the snow.

Winds will gust as high as fifty to sixty mph. Such strong winds can cause extensive tree damage.

Travel will be very difficult to impossible. Widespread blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. Expect travel delays, snow covered roads with possible chain controls and road closures. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.

A Flood Watch remains in effect for the Mother Lode, Mariposa County, the Yosemite National Park Valley floor and the entire San Joaquin Valley through late tonight (Monday).

Flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues to be possible. Lines of moderate to heavy rain, along with scattered afternoon thunderstorms, will be possible today resulting in the potential for urban and small stream flooding. The heaviest additional rainfall is anticipated this afternoon and evening. Rises are expected along mainstream rivers.

Excessive runoff could result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams, and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Creeks and streams may rise out of their banks. Flooding may occur in poor drainage and urban areas. Low-water crossings may be flooded. Storm drains and ditches may become clogged with debris. Mud and rock slides will remain possible.

You should monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action should flooding develop.
