Update: 2018 Primary Election Results
Update at 11:15pm: As it stands late this evening, all of the supervisor races in Tuolumne and Calaveras counties will head to a runoff election in November, as no candidates currently have over 50-percent of the vote. Many ballots will still need to be counted over the coming days. In Tuolumne County, chief election official Debi Bautista reports that over 2,100 ballots were dropped off at polling locations and 1,500 were received in the mail this afternoon, and they all still need to be counted. In the district two Tuolumne County Supervisor race the top two are Randy Hanvelt and Ryan Campbell and in District Three it is Anaiah Kirk and Laurie Sylwester. In Calaveras County district three the leaders are Merita Callaway and Michael Oliveira and in district five they are Clyde Clapp and Benjamin Stopper. Original story posted at 6:30am: Sonora, CA — It is Election Day, and races in Tuolumne County include board of supervisors, tax collector and Sonora City Council. In Calaveras County, there is a competitive race for sheriff, board of supervisors, and assessor. There are also regional races for state senate, assembly and congress, in addition to governor and US senate.
There is a change this year regarding anyone who forgot to register to vote ahead of the May 21st deadline. Tuolumne County Clerk and Auditor Controller Debi Bautista explains, “Brand new is that if one forgot to register to vote, one can come to our office and become a conditional voter, and actually vote, and their vote will count.”
If you have not registered already, the only location to cast a conditional ballot, and have it count, is the main election office at 2 South Green Street.
For state and federal races, like congress, governor and assembly, the top two vote getters, regardless of party, will move onto the General Election in November. For Sonora City Council, the top two vote getters during today’s primary win the seats. For county races, like board of supervisor, if a single candidate gets over 50-percent of the vote, they win the seat. If no candidate gets above 50-percent, the top two will move onto the General Election. In Tuolumne County supervisor district two there are 6,166 registered voters, district three has 6,211 and the City of Sonora has 2,504.
