Update: Dreaming Of A White Christmas?
A winter storm is expected to bring hazardous winter driving conditions to the Sierra Nevada mountains from Monday (Christmas Eve) into Tuesday (Christmas Day).
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Sierra Nevada above 5,000 feet, from Monday morning through Tuesday afternoon.
Snow levels will start out around the 6,000 foot elevation and begin to lower to 5,000 feet on the night of Christmas Eve. Snow will lower even further, down to around 4,000 feet on Christmas morning.
Total snow accumulations will range from half-a-foot to two feet above the 5,000 foot elevation.
Holiday travelers should consider adjusting travel times to avoid the heaviest snow, which is currently expected Monday afternoon and evening. Significant reductions in visibility are possible. Travel will be very difficult to impossible at times, including during the night of Christmas Eve.
A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
