Sonora, CA — This Friday is Veterans Day and several local events will be honoring our  veterans in the Mother Lode.

Murphy’s Resident Mike Rocco was Friday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.

This morning, the Calaveras Community Band conducted by Mic Harper, will be welcoming guests in Murphys at the Veterans Memorial on Algiers Street (by the Black Bart Playhouse parking lot) from 9-10 am with patriotic tunes. At 10 am, Boy Scout Troop #343 will serve as color guard and lead the Pledge of Allegiance as well as help display the individual flags representing each branch of the US Military. Linda (Anderson) Woolworth of Vallecito will then sing “Our National Anthem”.

Master of Ceremonies will be Jim Carlon of Arnold, President of the Ebbetts Pass Veteran’s Memorial District. AND Board Member Mr. Gary Lewis. Veteran’s in attendance will be introduced and thanked. Rocco will be displaying his future plans for the landscape expansion of the memorial as well. The ceremony will conclude with Mrs. Woolworth inviting the crowd to join her in “God Bless America.”

Elsewhere, a Flag Raising Ceremony will be held Friday at 11 am at Divide Cemetery between Groveland and Big Oak Flat. The ceremony will be lead by a bugler playing taps.

The Columbia Foot Dragoons invite the public to arrive at 10:50 am for the traditional Veterans Day Ceremony at 11:00 am at Columbia’s historic cemetery. They will explain the significance and origin of Veterans Day, and fire a single volley from a cannon.

Also on Friday, a Veterans Service will be held at 10:00 am. at the Ebbetts Pass Veterans Memorial District Monument, in Murphys. The Monument is located at the end of the parking lot by the Black Bart Playhouse.

The Native Daughters of the Golden West will host this year’s Veterans Day Dinner at the Native Sons Hall in Murphys. Reservations are necessary. The event starts at 5:00 pm with a flag ceremony at 5:30 pm.

On Saturday at 10:45 am, the Sonora Seventh-Day Adventist Church will have its 11th annual Veterans Recognition Day at the church on North Forest Road. The day includes a guest speaker, patriotic music, posting of our national and military colors and a free luncheon following the service.

On Sunday, the Sonora Emblem Club #124 will honor veterans at its annual “All American Veterans Breakfast & Bake Sale” from 8 am-11 am at the Sonora Elks Lodge at 100 Elk Drive.

Finally, in celebration of Veterans Day, Yosemite National Park is offering free admission to all visitors Friday through Sunday. All federal and state offices will also be closed including the courts, library, post office, and most full service banks.

The KVML “Newsmaker of the Day” is heard each weekday morning on AM 1450 KVML at 6:47, 7:47 and 8:47am.
