Business Organizations Endorse T.O.T. Increase

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — A pair of Tuolumne County business organizations is coming out in support of an increase in the Transient Occupancy Tax.

Both the Tuolumne County Business Council and the Tuolumne County Chamber Commerce are endorsing an increase in the T.O.T. to 10 percent (currently it is eight percent).

The tax is placed on visitors that utilize hotels or other lodging in the county.

“We’re concerned about the federal and state budgets and the cutbacks to local communities,” says Jim Conklin of the T.C. Business Council. “The business community believes that this is an investment in our future.”

Chamber President and CEO George Segarini says, “It is pretty obvious that the county needs more money and more funds. This would generate funds for the county, and also the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau.”

It is estimated that the increase would bring in $320,000 in additional yearly revenue. The proposal will be on the June 8th primary ballot. It has also been endorsed by the Tuolumne County Visitors Bureau and the Lodging Association.
