Jail Planning Resumes
San Andreas, CA – The proposed new Calaveras County Jail cleared a hurdle Tuesday.
The Board of Supervisors held a study session and voted 5-0 to move forward with the design phase of the project.
The Supervisors had temporarily suspended work in February, and waited for details about how the state would cover its share of the project costs.
“I think the Board has reached a comfort level with the state, and basically voted to move forward with the project,” says Sheriff Dennis Downum. “The Board certainly recognizes the need for the jail and I couldn’t have imagined them voting any other way.”
Downum says he is optimistic that design work will move quickly and hopes that requests for construction bids will go out before the end of the year.
