Summer Tourism Increased In Calaveras
Calaveras County saw an increase in Summer tourism compared to the past few years, according to the Calaveras Visitors Bureau.
Lisa Mayo, Calaveras Visitor Bureau Executive Director, was Wednesday’s KVML “Newsmaker of the Day”.
Mayo attributes the increased numbers to a good marketing campaign, tourists sticking closer to their regional home and a diversity of several activites offered throughout the county.
Winter projections statewide indicate a 4% increase in room reservations and Mayo is working hard to make sure that Calaveras will be a part of.
Over the next few weeks however, the Calaveras Visitors Center may soon have to close its doors. Trying to close a budget gap, the Angels Camp City Council has proposed that the Calaveras Visitor Bureau start paying rent beginning on November 1st, 2010. The Calaveras Visitors Board of Directors has concluded that any cost incurred by the board will force the Bureau from their current location in downtown Angels Camp.
Mayo is optimistic that the Visitors Center will continue to thrive, even if it is forced to relocate from the 700 square foot building.
