Congressman Urges Patriot Act Reauthorization
Washington, DC — While healthcare still dominates most of the discussion in Washington, DC, Republican Congressman Dan Lungren says he is concerned that some provisions in the U.S.A. Patriot Act will soon expire.
“Heightened terrorist activity in recent days and months – from the attempted bombing of a U.S. airliner on Christmas Day to the shootings at Fort Hood, to the murder of a Saudi Arabian border guard by Yemeni insurgents, reveal that our need for robust intelligence gathering tools has not diminished since 9/11,” states Lungren. “The U.S.A. Patriot Act has provided those agencies charged with protecting the security of the American people with the authority to combat terrorist activity both at home and abroad.”
Many of the Patriot Act provisions were set to expire on January 1st, but they were recently given a three month extension. Lungren hopes that a long term extension will be approved shortly after the first of the year.
Lungren’s 3rd District includes Calaveras County.
