Students Encouraged To Read On Dr. Seuss’s Birthday
Sonora, CA — Students in the Mother Lode are celebrating Dr. Seuss´s Birthday with reading.
The Read Across America Program was brought to Tuolumne County two years ago and Superintendent of Tuolumne County Schools Joe Silva says community members are reading to students all day.
Silva believes that students who are read to by adults other than their teachers are more likely to read for pleasure in the future.
Sullivan Creek Kindergarten teacher Elaine Emmons says the kids are very receptive to guest readers. When she asked her class if they liked reading, the kids all shouted, “YES” while seated Indian style in front of the “story chair.”
School officials say several reading inspired activities are in the works for the day; including a visit from the library.
