Legislation Would Help Prevent Fetal Alcohol Syndrome

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — Senator Barbara Boxer is cosponsoring a bill that would help prevent and treat Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.

There are no local statistics kept for Calaveras County, but Public Health Director Colleen Tracy says a five-year state survey shows an average of 8 percent of women surveyed in their third trimester reported consuming some alcohol.

According to Boxer´s office Fetal Alcohol Syndrome is associated with prenatal exposure to alcohol. It can cause brain damage that produces cognitive and behavioral impairments.

Proposed bill S.1722 would establish prevention programs with better education and public awareness.
