Stanislaus National Forest Offering Christmas Tree Permits Again

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — While the first day to cut one down is November 28, Christmas Tree Permits are now available for purchase for the Stanislaus National Forest.

The Forest Service notes, “Cutting a Christmas tree improves forest health. The permit system helps thin densely populated stands of small-diameter trees. Local forest health experts identify areas that benefit from thinning trees that tend to be the perfect size for Christmas trees. Removing these trees in designated areas helps other trees grow larger and can open areas that provide forage for wildlife.”

Permits are available for $10 through Recreation.gov, and there is also a $2.50 processing fee. Fourth graders with an Every Kid Outdoors pass are eligible for a free Christmas tree permit and can apply by entering the pass or voucher number when purchasing a permit.

A permit must be acquired and displayed on the vehicle dashboard for the tree(s) you are going to cut. There is a limit of one permit per Recreation.gov account, and the maximum purchase of two trees per permit. Trees can be cut down during a one-month window spanning from November 28 to December 31.
