Update: An Emergency Road Closure And Notice To Postpone Travel In Higher Elevations

Update at 12:33 p.m.: Calaveras County Public Works reports that Winton Road at Boy Scout Camp Road in West Point has reopened. It was temporarily closed yesterday evening due to an emergency hazard, which was not specified.

Original post at 6:20 p.m.: Murphys, CA—An emergency road closure and Calaveras County Public Works strongly advise the public to postpone travel to higher elevations beyond Murphys as the Mother Lode’s stormy conditions continue.

Public works reports that Winton Road has been temporarily closed by fire officials in West Point at Boy Scout Camp Road due to an emergency hazard, but did not release any additional information (see map below).

“For public safety, the road will remain closed for several hours while emergency crews perform clearing and ensure the area is safe for travel,” advised public works officials, who added, “Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes and avoid the area until further notice.

In regard to not traveling above Murphys, county road officials shared, “We are working diligently with our available resources to address as many needs throughout the county as possible. With the volume of downed trees and power lines, our staffing resources are spread thinner than usual, which may cause delays in snow removal activities. Our goal is to provide the best possible service with the resources available.”

For any questions or need to report road-related issues, contact the Calaveras County Public Works Department at (209) 754-6401 during regular business hours (Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 4 PM). After regular business hours, please contact the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office at (209) 754-6500.
