Manteca, CA — The East Union High School football player seriously injured in a game Friday night is showing signs of improvement.

Although his vital signs have improved, he has yet to regain consciousness and remains on a respirator following surgery to relieve skull pressure.

Van Gelderen was injured while blocking an opponent during a kickoff play against Bear Creek in Stockton.
