Board OKs Sheriff’s Plan To Revamp Animal Control

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA – The Calaveras County Board of Supervisors agree with Sheriff Dennis Downum´s plan to reorganize his department in order take over of Animal Control.

Animal Control used to be run by the Agriculture Commissioner but with the retirement of Jerry Howard in July, officials rethought that set up.

An assessment of the department showed poor management and deplorable conditions at the county Animal Shelter.

Downum decided to put sworn officers in charge to give the department some much-needed structure. A sheriff´s sergeant will become the animal control manager. Eventually though Downum said he would transition the sworn officers out.

The Calaveras Humane Society is pleased with the sheriff taking over Animal Control. President John Dashner said the Sheriff´s Department has accountability and a good management team.

Monday the board also officially gave the sheriff, management responsibilities for the department.
