Voters To Decide On Tourist Tax Hike

Sponsored by:

Voters will be deciding this November on whether to increase the tax on tourists who stay at local hotels and inns.

In a 4-to-1 vote Monday, the Sonora City Council agreed to put a proposal on the ballot to increase the Transient Occupancy Tax from 8 percent to 9 percent.

It´s a measure similar to the one passed by the Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors in May.

Supporters say the tax hike would help fund marketing campaigns to increase tourism and would make the city and county more competitive, since state money for marketing and promotion has been eliminated.
