Tuolumne, CA—Summerville High School’s varsity girls’ and boys’ soccer teams are being recognized as the top academic teams in California for their respective sports after both posted the highest team grade-point averages in the state during the 2025-26 school year.
The California Interscholastic Federation announced that 40 teams statewide had been selected as CIF State Academic Team Champions. The program, established in 1996, recognizes teams with the highest collective GPA in each CIF-approved sport, based on an unweighted 4.0 scale. Summerville’s girls soccer team, coached by Michael Portillo, posted a 3.97 GPA, the highest among all girls soccer teams in the state. The Bears shared the top spot with New Roads of the Southern Section, which also recorded a 3.97 GPA. Summerville’s boys soccer team, coached by Zac Garman, posted a 3.95 GPA, tying Crystal Springs Uplands of the Central Coast Section for the highest mark among boys soccer teams statewide.
The recognition means both Summerville soccer programs finished their respective seasons with the highest collective academic performance in California. The CIF awards were determined after each team first earned recognition as its respective CIF Section Academic Team Champion. Section offices then submitted their winners to the CIF State office for consideration.
The CIF will provide each State Academic Team Champion with a banner to display at its school in recognition of the achievement.
