The Sonora Wildcats lost their home opener to the Oakdale Mustangs 21-9, ending their 21-game winning streak.
Sonora received the opening kickoff and, despite a good drive deep into Oakdale territory, coughed the ball up for a turnover to kill the drive, in what would become a recurring theme for the evening. Oakdale moved ahead 7-0 on a big touchdown run on their opening drive, a lead they would never surrender. Two more Sonora drives ended in turnovers, and a late drive by the Wildcats could only net a field goal. Oakdale scored on the first drive out of the half, but Sonora answered with a long touchdown run from running back George Renault. The Mustangs answered on their next drive; however, a long touchdown pass gave them a 21-9 lead. Despite more drives into Oakdale territory, the Wildcats were unable to overcome fumble and penalty trouble to score for the remainder of the game.
George Renault won Chicken Ranch Casino Player of the Game for his long touchdown run in the third quarter.
In other gridiron action, Summerville lost to Ripon Christian 41-6, Calaveras beat Bradshaw Christian 34-14, and Bret Harte defeated Delhi 21-7.
