Grandma Is A Graduate

A 61-year old East Palo Alto grandmother is set to become a college graduate on Sunday. Mary Flamer was one of 14 children of Alabama sharecroppers.
But this weekend, she will take her place among 300 graduating seniors at Notre Dame de Namur University in Belmont. Flamer spent her adult life working as a maid and a clerk in a dry-cleaner´s. She also raised four children, and her family eventually settled in the Bay Area.
Four years ago, she decided to go back to college. She says she remembers praying on the first day of classes that she wouldn´t fall flat on her face. Flamer is graduating magna cum laude with a degree in English, and a minor in psychology and religion.
