Prison Guards Against New San Quentin Construction
California’s influential prison guards’ union has come out against Governor Davis’ proposal to spend $220 million to build a new death row at San Quentin State Prison. The move shocked administration officials who had expected the union’s support.
A spokesman for the California Correctional Peace Officers Association says, “The timing is just not right.” He’s referring to a state budget deficit that could reach nearly $35 billion. Union president Mike Jimenez plans to lead a rally by nearly 100 correctional officers at the Stockton prison this afternoon. A spokesman for the Youth and Adult Correctional Agency says despite opposition, Davis is committed to including the death row money in this year’s budget.
