New Traffic Signal Comes To Murphys
A new signal light will soon control the intersection of Highway 4 and Tom Bell and Big Trees roads in Murphys.
Caltrans announced last week that underground work would begin shortly on the $160,000 traffic signal.
Murphys citizens, including many from the Murphys Diggins Mobile Home Park off Tom Bell Road, have campaigned several years for a signal at the intersection, deemed by many to be hazardous.
The Calaveras Enterprise reports Caltrans decided to install the stop signs in the summer of 2001 as a temporary safety measure after a Diggins resident was killed pulling out onto the highway. Transportation officials announced at that time the signal would follow later.
