Davis Signs “E-Waste” Bill
Governor Davis has signed a bill that imposes fees on computer monitors and televisions to fund programs to recycle electronic waste, also known as “e-waste.”
The Electronic Waste Recycling Act requires consumers to pay a $6 to $10 fee on monitors and televisions that contain lead, mercury and other hazardous materials.
The bill requires the eventual elimination of hazardous substances from electronic equipment and bans disposal of televisions and computers in countries that don´t follow U.S. environmental standards.
Under the new law, electronics manufacturers must demonstrate their compliance beginning July 1, 2004.
