A total of 51 people have been killed in statewide traffic collisions this holiday weekend. The California Highway Patrol released the figure this morning. The agency plans to keep every available officer on duty through today. Already, 1,589 people have been arrested for drunk driving since Friday. Of the 44 people killed in accidents in CHP jurisdiction this weekend, 27 were not wearing seat belts. The last Fourth of July holiday that took place on a four-day weekend was in the year 2000. 38 people were killed during that four-day period.
