While more than one thousand firefighters continue to battle the 8,600 acre Sierra wildfire near Topaz Lake, other crews are attempting to return some normalcy to the area. US 395, which has been closed since the weekend could re-open later today after burned guardrails are replaced. Highway 89 is closed from 395 to Highway 4. Sierra Pacific is working to restore power lines that were burned when the fire jumped the highway on Sunday. Fire information officer Jenny Scanland says the threat to more than 250 homes in the area along US 395 is significantly lessened. Firefighters, aided by air tankers, helicopters and bulldozers, have managed to reach 30% containment.
