Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Simon is slashing his campaign staff nearly in half to free up money for the campaign against Democratic Governor Davis. Simon press secretary Mark Miner says approximately 30 staff members are being laid off today from a staff of just over 70. Miner would not specify who was being let go but says most of the top campaign officials will remain in place. Miner says, “These were very difficult decisions that were made to maximize our resources heading into the fall.” Davis had some $30 million in his campaign treasury at the last reporting period June 30th, compared with $5 million for Simon. The governor has been saturating the airwaves with ads attacking Simon, who has not aired commercials for weeks.
