The Stork Stops By The Oakland Zoo
A new arrival at the Oakland Zoo weighing in at 320 pounds.
After five hours of labor, Lisa the
elephant, gave birth to a healthy male elephant at 10:00 this morning.
The baby elephant doesn´t have a name, and he´s not ready for a public
appearance yet. But mom and baby are reportedly doing fine.
The zoo has been preparing for the birth for almost a year. They built a special birth
chute so zoo keepers could get close to Lisa during the birth without getting hurt.
The baby´s father, an African elephant named Smokey, died five
months ago, so it´s an especially happy day. Now, the mother and baby will spend some time together to bond.
