Residents of the nation´s largest Afghan community reacted to news of today´s bombings with a mixture of
joy and apprehension. Osama bin Laden is hated in Fremont, but many Afghan immigrants fear relatives in their homeland will suffer during the conflict to come.
News of the bombings circulated quickly in “Little Kabul,´´ a strip of shops that is the commercial and cultural heart of Fremont´s Afghan community and is
named after the Afghan capital that was the first target of Sunday´s bombings. Fremont is believed to be the largest Afghan community, with others
concentrated in Southern California, and the New York and Washington, D-C areas.
