Boy Scout Bill Stalls
Sacramento, CA – The Associated Press reports a bill to strip the Boy Scouts of America of its tax-exempt status because of the organization’s refusal to allow gay troop leaders has stalled in the Legislature. The Senate approved it in May, but it was placed on the inactive file in the Assembly today. The AP says because the legislation is a tax measure, it requires a two-thirds vote in both houses to pass.
Also, the state Senate has passed a bill intended to accelerate and streamline the process for dismissing teachers accused of misconduct. The legislation is a response to last year’s arrest of a teacher at a Los Angeles elementary school who was charged with 23 counts of engaging in lewd conduct with students and later challenged his firing.
