Students Perform “Poetry Out Loud”
Sonora, CA — There was a packed house at the Tuolumne County Poetry Out Loud competition.
13 high school students from Tuolumne County competed for the chance of moving on to next month’s state competition in Sacramento. The statewide event is put on by the California Arts Council, and the local competition was organized by the Tuolumne County Arts Alliance.
“For the first time we had participants from each of the local high schools,” says Michele Tennant of the Tuolumne County Arts Alliance. “The champion for the county is Teresa Woods, who is a Senior at Connections Academy. The runner-up, who is the alternate for the state competition, is Levi Lowe, who is a Freshman at Sonora High.”
The students memorized the poems and gave their presentation before a panel of judges. The competition featured three rounds. The state competition will be March 24-25. The local competition was held Tuesday at Stage Three Theatre.
