Safety First For A Spooktacular Halloween
Sonora, CA – This Halloween, make sure safety comes first in decorating and costumes. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2018 to 2022, the latest statistics, decorations caused an average of 835 home fires each year, costing $14 million in property damage. NFPA reported that nearly half of these fires started because decorations were placed too close to heat sources.
CAL Fire offers these tips to keep Halloween fun and safe:
- Remember to keep decorations away from candles, hot lights, or any heat sources.
- Ensure that exits are clear and check your smoke alarms.
Just like decorations, Halloween costumes can create scary situations. CAL Fire provided these tips for keeping costumes safe:
- Choose costumes made of fire-resistant fabric.
- Teach children the importance of staying away from open flames, such as candles in jack-o’ lanterns.
- Ensure kids are familiar with the ‘stop, drop, and roll’ technique in case their costume catches fire.
CAL Fire officials add, “Halloween safety is key for your spooktacular celebrations!”
