New Legislative Session Gets Underway At State Capitol
Sacramento, CA — California lawmakers return to the state capitol today, and newly elected lawmakers, including Mother Lode Assemblyman David Tangipa, will take the oath of office.
There is also a special session getting underway in which Governor Gavin Newsom hopes to take various actions ahead of incoming President-elect Donald Trump stepping into office. Republicans, however, have countered that they hope to work with President Trump on issues facing Californians and have criticized Newsom’s special session.
Newsom and Trump have sparred over recent months on the campaign trail, with Newsom calling Trump a threat to Democracy, and Trump referring to Newsom as “New-Scum.”
Democratic lawmakers are planning to allocate more money to the State Attorney General in anticipation of future lawsuits. During President Trump’s first term, California sued the administration 122 times over environmental, health, immigration, and other issues.
Over the coming months, California lawmakers will also pass a new budget, ahead of the July 1st new fiscal year. The state is facing an estimated $2 billion shortfall.
