“Boom” Heard Across Region

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — At around 8am this morning law enforcement agencies across the Mother Lode started fielding calls from people that heard a loud explosion.

What caused the “boom” was initially a mystery as there were no earthquakes in Northern California, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Multiple law enforcement officials say that they believe that a meteoriod entered the atmosphere, leading to the seismic boom.

Callers reporting the explosion came from Arnold down to Jamestown. The CHP offices in Merced and Los Banos also received calls asking about an explosion at around 8am. More information will be passed along when and if it becomes available.

It is noted that CAL Fire also received a report of a possible debris fire in the Crystall Falls area shortly after the explosion. The two incidents are not believed to be connected.
