Denham Authors Student Protection Bill
Sacramento, CA – Senator Jeff Denham wants to limit the authority of UC and CSU governing boards to call for student tuition hikes.
The “Student Protection Act” would require the UC and CSU to provide a 180 day waiting period before a tuition hike goes into effect. It would also limit fee increases to 10 percent per year.
Denham states, “It’s unconscionable for our public universities to hit families and students with giant fee increases midyear when these public institutions are failing to be fiscally responsible.”
UC Regents recently hiked student fees by 32 percent midyear. Denham says the UC system has excess property that should be sold off before student fees are increased.
