Hawkins Takes Office

Sponsored by:

Sonora, CA — Matt Hawkins is officially a member of the Sonora City Council.

Hawkins was sworn in at Tuesday night’s meeting. Two seats were up for election in June. Hawkins won the first seat and incumbent Hank Russell won the second.

“One of the biggest things we need to do is find ways to keep our city financially solvent and find ways to cut money without killing jobs,” says Hawkins. “We need to do our best to attract jobs. Obviously we have Lowe’s coming in and McDonalds sometime down the road, but we can definitely help bring more jobs up here because we’re a great place to locate.”

As a political newcomer, the 30-year-old Hawkins notes that he was “shocked and deeply humbled” to be the top vote getter in the June election.
