Popular Bike Race May Move To Calaveras County

Sponsored by:

San Andreas, CA — The Sierra Century race, which now takes place in Amador County, may cross the county line over to Calaveras next year.

The ride, which attracts roughly 2,000 riders, is sponsored by the Sacramento Wheelmen bicycling club.

With organizers showing interest in moving the event, Calaveras County Supervisor Steve Wilensky says he is working with the Calaveras County Visitors Bureau to bring the ride to Calaveras.

Organizer Dale Tudor of Sacramento says the race has been held in Plymouth for the last 10 years. He is eager to find a new route here in Calaveras. Tudor is waiting to hear back from Ironstone Vineyards on the possibility of using the venue as a home base for the ride.

The ride would start in Murphys and head up country from there.

Wilensky says bringing the race to Calaveras would be an economic boon for the county as riders stay in local hotels and eat in local restaurants.

Tudor says a decision could be made by the end of the month.
