Forestry Officials Will Hold Off Enforcement of New Law

Sponsored by:

State and local fire officials say they will not immediately enforce a new law requiring property owners to clear fire breaks 100 feet around their homes.

The law was passed last year and went into effect January 1st. Officials say it is the board´s responsibility to interpret the law and advise forestry officials on how to enforce it.

Until that happens, forestry officials will recommend, rather than demand, compliance with the law. Homeowners will also be advised of any pending changes while officials clarify the law´s wording.

Meanwhile, the Department of Forestry plans to enforce the old law requiring a thirty-foot buffer around people´s homes. Violators of that law can be fined as much as $200.
