Shipments of California wines are up compared to a year earlier. The Wine Institute reports that sales rose nearly seven percent during the first 10 months of 2002. Wineries have boosted sales by offering favorable prices to retailers.
Many wineries are also selling wines under some type of generic labeling. But sales have not increased as quickly as wine production, which has swelled because of recent plantings of wine grapes.
