Holiday Deaths, DUI Up Statewide

The California Highway Patrol reports that during the first 12 hours of the New Year holiday period there were
five deaths in traffic accidents in the state. Three of the persons killed in accidents in CHP jurisdiction were not wearing seat restraints.
During the same period a year ago from 6 p.m. New Year´s Eve to 6 a.m. New Year´s morning there were three deaths. A large increase in drunken driving arrests is reported compared to a year ago. There were 534 arrests by 6 a.m. today statewide compared to 283 in the same period of New Year 2002.
