Investigators Search For Blast Clues

State and Federal investigators continue to look for clues after a large pipe bomb exploded at a Calaveras County government building in San Andreas.

Calaveras County Sheriff´s Captain Mike Walker says the bomber targeted the county´s Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program building. The structure is a single-story modular building, one of five located in the area to the rear of the main Government Center facilities off Mountain Ranch Road.

“The rear of the building sustained exterior wall damage,” Walker said. An air conditioning unit and an electrical panel was also damaged by the blast.

Investigators say some witnesses saw a possible suspect leaving the scene. The man was about 5´8″, 160 pounds, wearing a white T-shirt and dark pants. He may be driving a newer model, shiny forest green pickup truck. Meanwhile, back at the site of the explosion, investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms will be gathering more evidence.

“We´ll have to get into these fields for blast debris,” Walker added. ATF agents also brought in trained canines to sniff for possible additional explosives and bomb fragments.

About 30 county employees in four departments were held from work this morning because of the blast investigation.
