Half of Lightning-Sparked Fires Contained

The US Forest Service now says more than half of the lightning sparked fires on the Stanislaus National Forest have been contained.

USFS spokesman Pat Kaunert also says that the 5-acre blaze burning 6 miles northeast of Groveland was contained this morning. That was the largest of the lighting-sparked blazes.

Kaunert says seven new lightning-caused fires broke out over the weekend. Even though there´s no lighting in the forecast, it´s still going to be hot and dry.

“With that warmer and drier weather, we may say additional sleepers come to life,” Kaunert said. He also said firefighters stand ready to “knock ´em out” if more fires are detected.

About 100 firefighters are still in the forest battling the blazes, which average less than 1/4 acre in size.

None of the fires threaten any homes.
