Close Call For Groveland Couple

Sponsored by:

An elderly Groveland couple escaped serious injury yesterday morning when their Jeep Cherokee went off the Old Priest Grade and down the embankment about a mile from the top of the grade.

The road was closed at 9:30 a.m. in both directions yesterday. Emergency crews used ropes to get the injured victims back up the embankment to an awaiting ambulance.

The CHP says wet roadway on the steep downgrade caused the vehicle to lose traction and slide of the roadway on a curve. The Jeep rolled down the embankment, landing on its wheels. Officers credit the use of seat belts by 86 year-old Gilbert, and 80 year-old Ruth Morris for protecting them from being more seriously injured.
