Pigs Pose Problem In Park
State officials are targeting feral pigs in Henry W. Coe State Park east of Morgan Hill to try to stop the damage the animals do to native wildlife and water in the park. About 300 of the pigs have been killed in the last two weeks. The pigs uproot so much of the plant life that they´re blamed for causing severe erosion and silt problems from storm runoff. Their rooting also disturbs amphibian and reptile habitat and can destroy oak saplings. The pigs also compete with deer, squirrel, quail and other birds for food.
The pigs are a problem all around the San Francisco Bay area, and have only been contained in Marin County. They are especially a problem at Coe park, which covers 134 square miles, because it is ideal habitat for them.
