Welfare On The Rise In California

The state is seeing more California families on welfare rolls. CalWORKS, the state welfare program, says this is the first increase in six years. The increase is especially large in the San Francisco Bay Area, where the high-tech industry has suffered. Across California, the number of cases grew to 500 thousand in November, which is an increase of 45 hundred households. The Urban Institute says welfare dependence has increased in 33 states nationwide from March to September of last year.
