Hetch Hetchy Upgrade To Be Considered, Fixes Total In The Billions

Sponsored by:

Utility officials have proposed a 4.6 billion dollar bond measure for the November ballot to upgrade the 68 year old Hetch Hetchy water system. The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission says the system´s infrastructure is in serious disrepair and could fail in an earthquake.

Under the proposal, the tab would be paid through a series of increases in water rates charged to Hetch Hetchy customers in San Francisco, Alameda, Santa Clara and San Mateo counties.

If approved, the average four person San Francisco household would see its monthly water bill more than triple. Suburban users´ rates would more than double. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors would have to approve the measure before it could be placed on the ballot.
