Two climbers have stepped into the record books by scaling the celebrated El Capitan in Yosemite National Park for the 100th time. Hans Florine and Steve Gerberding are considered two of the best rock climbers in the world. They reached the summit of the three thousand foot wall Saturday night after 14 hours of nonstop climbing. The record once seemed out of reach. El Cap was not conquered until 1958, five years after mountaineers reached the summit of Mount Everest. The sheer cliff was considered unscalable until new techniques and equipment were developed after World War Two. This weekend’s climb also shattered the previous 22-hour mark for the route Florine and Gerberding took. Florine now has set 13 records on El Cap.
