The feud over Barry Bonds´ historic 73rd home run ball continues today is a San Francisco court room. The debate began last year when Alex Popov sued Patrick Hayashi after Bonds homered on October 7th, 2001 to finish the season with 73 home runs, a new major league record. Popov claims he caught the ball but then lost it when frenzied fans at Pacific Bell Park pounced on him. Hayashi came up with the ball. Opening statements began yesterday and some of the first witnesses were called. Popov´s lawyer says catching and then losing the ball was his client´s American dream turned into a nightmare.
