Redskins Nickname Ban Passes Assembly

Sponsored by:

Sacramento, CA — A bill that would impact Calaveras High School has passed in the California Assembly and it now moves to the Senate.

AB 30, authored by Democratic Assemblyman Luis Alejo, would ban the use of “Redskins” for school athletic team names, mascots or nicknames. The ban would begin in 2017. The legislation was approved in the Assembly yesterday with a 59-7 vote. If also approved in the Senate then it would go to the Governor for his signature.

Calaveras High School is one of just a few in the state that uses the Redskins nickname.

On a related note, the Associated Press reports that a federal panel decided last year that the Washington Redskins NFL trademark should be discontinued because its racially derogatory. The team is challenging the decision in federal court.
