Madera County, CA – An officer-involved shooting investigation is underway after a Mariposa man allegedly stole a vehicle and then shot a K9 while in a foot chase with Madera County Sheriff’s deputies.

Shortly after 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 20, a report of multiple vehicle hits and runs on Highways 49 and 41 in Oakhurst sent deputies racing to that area. According to sheriff’s officials, the suspect was driving a stolen vehicle, as the owner recognized it, called 9-1-1. They then followed the suspect, giving the locations to dispatchers. During the pursuit, the suspect also rammed the reporting party’s car.

Deputies put down spikes to disable the vehicle, but before reaching them, the suspect vehicle went off the road. He fled on foot down a long driveway as deputies gave chase.

“During the foot chase, the suspect shot our K9 Obie with a shotgun and an exchange of gunfire occurred. K9 Obie and the suspect were both struck,” stated sheriff’s officials.

The suspect is identified as 41-year-old Allen Scott Williams of Mariposa. He was flown to a Fresno hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery.

K9 Obie was taken to a nearby emergency veterinary clinic. X-rays showed his body was riddled with shotgun pellets that would remain there for the rest of his life.

“Our thoughts and prayers remain with our beloved K9 Obie as he recovers. Obie’s bravery and selfless service may very well have saved a deputy’s life, and we are profoundly grateful for his sacrifice and courage,” stated Madera Sheriff Tyson Pogue.

Williams has several active felony arrest warrants related to a felon in possession of ammunition and assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently on probation out of Mariposa County and is now facing multiple fresh felony charges.

“I want to commend the swift and decisive response of our deputies, whose actions prevented further danger to the Oakhurst community,” commented Sheriff Pogue. “Apprehending a dangerous criminal like Williams is a testament to their dedication to public safety.”

The Madera Police Department is overseeing the deputy-involved shooting investigation. There will also be an internal administrative investigation. The deputies’ identities are not being released. They will be placed on administrative leave.
