Heavy rain with increased flood potential is forecast for the Mother Lode from Monday night into Thursday.

Persistent rain, heavy at times, will lead to rapid rises of rivers and streams and may lead to some flooding. Flooding of low lying areas is expected including in the foothills and lower mountain elevations were snow melt will add to the amount of water in the streams and on the roads.

In addition to the flood potential, mud and debris flows from the burn scars, rock slides, downed tree limbs and power outages will all be possible.

As for snow, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the Sierra Nevada above 5,000 feet, from Monday morning through Wednesday afternoon.

Total snow accumulations above the 5,000 foot elevation, will range from half-a-foot to six feet. The higher you go, the more the snow.

A Winter Storm Watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.
