Body Remains Missing
San Andreas, CA — A killer’s effort to lead law enforcement authorities to the body of one of his four victims has frustrated investigators.
The Associated Press reports that a search crew spent last week digging up a San Andreas hillside where death row inmate Wesley Shermantine said he buried 16-year-old Chevelle “Chevy” Wheeler in 1985. Shermantine had sent a letter to the Stockton Record Newspaper, and well-known television bounty hunter Leonard Padilla of Sacramento, indicating that the body was buried at location near his family member’s San Andreas home. Shermantine also asked for $18,000 in restitution from authorities for information that would lead to the discovery of the other three bodies.
But after using cadaver dogs, picks, axes and a backhoe to search the San Andreas spot, sheriff’s deputies found no human remains.
