Groveland Man Involved In Shootout

Sponsored by:

Groveland, CA — A Groveland man is in serious but stable condition after opening fire on California Highway Patrol Officers in Oakland.

The Associated Press says 45-year-old Byron Christopher Williams was armed with a high powered rifle, a shotgun and body armor when two officers attempted to pull him over for a traffic stop early yesterday morning on Interstate 580. Williams opened fire on the officers, who returned fire and called for backup. Additional officers responded and took Williams into custody after shooting him in the leg, arm, side and foot.

The westbound lane of I-580 was closed down for much of yesterday as authorities investigated. Two officers suffered minor injuries. Williams is a convicted felon. He was taken to Highland Hospital.
